“Not only do I belong, but I can be better than you!” said Lazarus when describing the struggles he faced back when he first started rapping. And Dr. Kamran Rashid Khan, aka Lazarus, is doing just that. Not only is he a skillful physician, he is a skillful rhyme-slayer shaking up the Hip Hop world. Lazarus’ story is truly inspirational, and one that can motivate people just like you to follow their dreams, and succeed. In a recent interview with the BBC World Service, he shared his deepest thoughts and feelings. He also shared numerous tips to achieve success at the highest level. We had the opportunity to get the extended video of the entire interview, of course because we are pretty much the best, right? Right! Interview Excerpts: Brand New Album, Guinness Book of World Records, SXSW, and more!

Here are some interesting excerpts from the interview.

Interviewer: You are a doctor, and a rapper. Which one came first? Lazarus: The doctor came first, because that’s something I’ve been working on since I was in elementary school. In order to be a physician, you have to dedicate yourself a 110% of your time to getting it. I say it lightly sometimes that I am a physician, but it’s not a joke to be a physician. To go through medical school, and all the years of hard work and labor. The mental labor that you have to go through, and all of the stresses. Since high school you have to be on top of your game. I had a 4.0 GPA in High school, and because of that, I got a full-ride scholarship in Wayne State University. I maintained a 4.0 GPA in college as well. And having gone through that experience, I worked hard to get a great score in my MCAT exam to enter Medical School. And once you’ve done all that, and you enter Medical School, you pretty much have to kiss your life good bye, because you don’t even have time to make phone call conversations with your family! But, I was in Medical School, at the same time making phone call conversations with my family, and I was also rapping, coming to the studio making albums. I’m not trying to boast or show off, but I am trying to influence others to follow their passions. It may seem impossible, but you have to bend and twist reality to make it the way you want it to be. Interviewer: How did your family take your path? Lazarus: You know, I think my family took it as much as any Desi family would take it. My father would say that this is not the path to go. But, my older brother was an enormous inspiration and a role model. He always pushed to be a heavy weight prizefighter, a boxer. No matter what, he kept pushing for his dream and went against the grain, and did what he did best. I’m not directly aiming at my family, but people in general. If something hasn’t been done in history, and your son wants to do that, it’s completely natural for any parent to say something like, “You know, I appreciate your drive and passion, but realistically it’s not possible.” But you know that you’re passionate and you know that you have the skills to make it happen, then you know that you can do it. Interviewer: How do you balance being a Physician, and a rapper? Lazarus: My life is really busy. I’m going for the Guinness Book of World Records, just because I am passionate. I feel the drive, the passion, the need from my soul to make that happen. There’s not a single soul out there doing what I do. I’d searched to find another like me, and there’s no body! So I decided that I’m going to be the first to make this happen, to be a successful Doctor, and a successful rapper. Interviewer: Tell us more about what you are up to now? Lazarus: We’re putting together a new album called “Music is My Medicine”. Working on a whole bunch of tracks, I got a whole bunch of shows coming up. Shows at St. Andrews in Detroit. And SXSW next year, that’s one of the largest shows in the US (They have been around for 27 years!) I’ll just keep on doing things that’s never been done. Every time I see something that hasn’t been done, you bet I’m going to go and do just that! When I did my performance and got a standing ovation at Russell Simmons’ house, it was shocking. That’s a testament to the fact that nothing is impossible. Anything that you deem as impossible can be made possible with your conviction, passion, and the love for what you do.
