We can see influences of Hip Hop on South Asian music since the start of the late 80’s. In the past 25 years, Hip Hop has evolved into a lifestyle for millions of South Asian’s globally. Not only have South Asian Artists embraced Hip Hop, but Hip Hop has embraced South Asian Artists. Desi media & youth all over the world have adopted the core lifestyle elements of Hip Hop, i.e. Emceeing, DJing, Breaking, and Graffiti Writing.
There are two unifying elements driving the Hip Hop movement in the Desi Culture:
1. Desi is a universal reference to person of South Asian decent (i.e. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Nepal, and Bhutan)
2. Hip Hop is a universal platform for the under-represented minority, providing a voice to those who never had one, in an effort to generate Awareness, Unity & Equality amongst the people. Our Vision is to create a common ground for leading, and upcoming, South Asian Hip Hop Artists to join & support the Hip Hop movement in Desi culture and to drive Awareness, Unity & Equality amongst our people.
