‘Hip-Hop Alive‘ was supposed to be an annual event when Nasty Ninja started it three years ago. He was not able to make it an annual event the following years because Ninja was busy with his solo projects and the Mumbai’s Finest album.
Well, ‘Hip-Hop Alive’ is making a comeback this year and has sincerely upgraded from its previous edition. This B-Boy competition will be featuring contestants from all parts of the country. ‘Hip-Hop Alive’ has been getting queries from hundreds of aspiring participants. This jam will take place in Social on April 4, 2017, will also be featuring performances by Mumbai’s Finest, Swadesi, Dopeadelicz, D-Hood and Sphere FX.
I caught up with Raja R.me from Team INC, the man in charge for putting this event together and this is what he had to say:
SLYCK: TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT ‘HIP-HOP @LIVE’?
RAJA: ‘Hip-Hop Alive’ is a beast mode jam which was started by a pioneer in the hip-hop scene, Nasty Ninja around 3 years back ago. Back then, just one edition was done, I got to know Ninja pretty well as an artist and a visionary and wanted to do something together. We didn’t have much time to come up with a new name and this property was created within 2 weeks of preparation.
SLYCK: WHAT GOT YOU TO ORGANIZE THIS EVENT?
RAJA: The love and the culture. I’ve been a passionate follower of hip-hop for almost half of my age and I’m 27 right now so go figure. Being active in the hip-hop and rap scene since 2005, we didn’t really have much offered to us or anyone taking an initiative to build something within the community to make it strong, I started executive producing from ‘Bombay Rap Cypher‘ to ‘Mere Gully Mein‘ and now its ‘Hip-Hop Alive’. We have more coming up within the hip-hop space stay tuned.
SLYCK: WHAT IS THE EXPECTED TURN UP AT THE EVENT AND WHERE ALL DO YOU ALL WILL BE GETTING PARTICIPATION FROM?
RAJA: Man I’ve been getting calls from all over the country from Bihar, Delhi, Rajasthan. This kid who is just 17 years old called me the other day saying he wanted to participate and his parents have given him permissions to come to Nagpur. So, he wanted details. We have kept two hours for registration on the spot.
SLYCK: THE ARTISTS LINE-UP LOOKS DOPE. HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO GET ALL OF THEM TOGETHER?
RAJA: All we had to do was to tell them that this is an initiative which is free for all. You need to understand that hip-hop family in Mumbai is very close knit and we love supporting and standing for each other. So, here we are coming together for the community.
SLYCK: HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU THINK ARE SUCH EVENTS IN PROMOTING HIP-HOP AND TALENT?
RAJA: I think this is a part of the history down here. This is going to be spoken about even 5 years or a decade down the line but here’s the thing, I’m going to ensure such an initiative and such property stay happening and it’s not just a once and done thing. Now, with RedbullBCONE, which is one of the biggest b-boy movements supporting this, I guess we are in the right space.
SLYCK: TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR EVENTS IN PIPELINE?
RAJA: A lot is happening Slyck. You will be the first one to know about all of that. Till then, let’s keep it groovy and keep the good vibes flowing.
