Starting To Rap? Check Out This Rappers Starter Kit

In this article, I will go through what I had in the vault when I started out as a rapper. Some aspiring rappers have little knowledge about recording themselves and about the post production process; I hope this article clears things out.

This article is for the aspirants who can’t afford to record at the studio again and again.

Recently one of ours authors at DHH wrote an article on “How To Write Better Music” and if you haven’t checked it out yet then know that it is helpful and highly essential. It discusses the structure of songs as well as the flows which you need to have a proper understanding of. This article is more about what to do once you have your material ready.

1) Equipment

An artist shouldn’t really think of saving when it comes to starting his or her career. Remember you are investing in yourself. I can give you a cheap alternative but it is up to you if you want to use it. You could always record a demo on your phone but remember quality matters a lot.

‘Samson’ is a renounced company when it comes to sound. A lot of rappers are using the equipment made by Samson as it is effective. ‘Samson C01U Pro USB Studio Condenser Microphone’ was my first microphone and it currently costs Rs. 6849. It’s a USB microphone so you don’t need to worry about the soundcard. Also, there are always cheap alternatives available. Read the reviews before you invest in any other equipment and if you have the cash go for Rode microphones.

2) Software

This is after you have purchased the microphone. There are several Softwares’ (free) which give you quality recording. Audacity is one such software which is easy to use and offers a tutorial that is very informative, and you can download it from the link below.Samson C01U Pro USB Studio Condenser Microphone

The next step is mixing and mastering, which please do not do if you don’t know the whole process; It’s not easy. There are always people you could outsource, be it studios or individuals. If you don’t have a cash source then I suggest you to go through a lot of youtube tutorials where you could learn the whole process. My favourite software for mixing and mastering is Mixcraft. This has presets to the mixing and mastering process.

3) Marketing

Marketing is one of the most important parts because even if your one of the best track to have been created in the industry, no one would know about it unless you make it available to them. There are different ways to market yourself or your tracks but there are some essentials. You need to have the following to get started:
1) Facebook Page
2) Soundcloud
3) Instagram
4) Youtube

These are communicative tools and it helps you to reach a wide audience. Running adverts helps your views and gives you exposure.

If you need dope music videos, do leave it to the hands of professionals and if not, you could always create a zero budget video.

There are a lot of other things that you might need, but these will help you get started. If you have additional queries do leave them in the comment section. I’ll be sure to address them in the next article.
