Delhi-based underground rap artist Jay Sehgal is known for his skills in the rap battle scene. A video of him competing with Ekasha in a rap battle was released by Spit Dope Inc on their YouTube channel almost two months ago. When it comes to the content of his songs, his style of rapping is raw. He stepped in the rap music scene almost 2 years ago and since then he has participated in several cyphers, also won ‘Frontline’ which was a rap battle hosted by ‘6FU’.
“Shaitaan khud mein aur dosh Illuminati ko?” – Jay Sehgal
Ajay Sehgal who goes by his stage name Jay Sehgal came back in the picture when he dropped a free verse, ‘Society’ on October 21st, 2016, on his YouTube channel. Fans and artists who are actively involved in the underground scene started sharing this track and gradually the number of shares started to increase. This track was recorded on the instrumental of J.Cole’s ‘A Tale of 2 Cities’ which is a very popular track from his 2014 album ‘2014 Forest Hills Drive’, and is now a double platinum selling album.
Jay decided to talk about society and it’s arrogance on this instrumental by using words that everyone in the Desi Hip-Hop scene is familiar with. He has used multi-syllable rhymes that are full of punches like “Jaise Delhi ki garmi aayi hai pyaas lekar, Hai tere paas khaali glass, Main Chivas Regal”.
A few listeners of Hip-Hop music are not into punchlines or battles but their preference shifts to rap music when it comes to bars that have a deep meaning. Jay didn’t compromise on that front. He wrote and recorded several lines like “Kya naam dun aisi society ko? NGO karein sponsor rave party ko” on this free verse. His talk is almost street and to keep the flavour intact, he decided to shoot a video for this project in the Inner Circle of Connaught Place in Delhi.
This track has raised the level of expectations for what his future music is going to be like. Today, when most of the independent artists try to increase their views on Youtube, ‘Society’ by Jay has only achieved 400 views. But to us, views are just numbers. He is one of those few artists who are less popular amongst the audience but one should not sleep on.
