There’s no doubt that President Barack Obama is a fan of hip-hop. He’s kept a consistent flow of hip-hop artists throughout the White House whether they were performing or just stopping by. He’s known for being pretty close to hip-hop’s royal duo Jay-Z and Beyoncé and knowing Chance The Rapper since he was just little Chancellor Johnathan Bennett.
A few months ago, Prez Obama called into SiriusXM’s Sway in the Morning. During the interview, Sway asked BO “Who are your top MCs today? Who are the top rappers in the game today, in your opinion?” President Obama then gave him the rundown on who he thinks is heading the game.
He began revealing two of hip-hop’s biggest stars. “I think the young guys, Kendrick [Lamar] and Chance [the Rapper] are doing amazing work. I love Drake, and the girls love Drake, and, you know, so, he’s commercially just doing great, and unbelievably talented,” he said.
“Chance, I’ve known for years because his dad was my state director when I was a senator in Illinois, so I first met Chance when he was 8 years old, and so we’ve been family for a while. And Kendrick, you know, he’s blowing it up. He’s doing great,” the prez continued.
Chance has been very vocal about his history as well. A few months ago, he told a very funny story on the prez’s response when Chance told him he raps.
The president only mentioned the aforementioned, but that doesn’t mean that those are the only artists on his radar. He added Wale, Common, Nas, and Method Man on his 2016 Summer Playlists. We sure are going to miss the coolest. president. ever.
