Viacom18 has just announced Macklemore as the second headliner at this year’s VH1 Supersonic Festival. The four-time grammy winning artist will perform in February at the festival’s new home in Pune.
Since it’s inception in 2013, the festival has established itself as one of the region’s best dance music properties – nurturing an educated and engaged community of artists and fans that has helped them create a unique experience for their audience. This year, the programming team at Viacom18 has really pushed the envelope for the Indian touring circuit by booking two of the biggest artists to have graced their respective genres in recent years – Eric Prydz and Macklemore.
Macklemore, who rose to fame with the release of his catchy single ‘Thrift Shop’, largely remained unnoticed by the mainstream industry until he joined forces with producer Ryan Lewis. Their debut album The Heist one of the few debut albums to reach the top of the Billboard charts without support from a major label. Their second album, titled This Unruly Mess I’ve Made, was released in 2016 – with lead single ‘Downtown’ becoming a radio success.
Macklemore’s arrival comes hot on the heels of DJ Premier’s India tour – and hopefully their tours will help establish India as a viable market for more artists in the future. We can’t give the team behind VH1 Supersonic enough credit for making this happen, and with the promise of more announcements to come – we’re excited to see what else they have in store for us!
