Grammy Nominations 2017

The 59th edition Of Grammy’s will take place on February 12, 2017. With the Nominations announced on December 6th, Beyonce is leading with nine nominations followed by Drake with eight. Here we have a list of the nominations related to the rap culture.

Grammy 1

Album Of The Year

“Views” -Drake

This year has been good for Hip Hop with a lot of albums dropping from various artists. “Views” was released in April and even though it’s the only one is nominated for the Album Of The Year from the collective of rappers who dropped albums, it has serious competition with respect to other artists who are nominated in the same category. He is competing with Beyonce, Adele, Justin Bieber and Sturgill Simpson. Do you think someone else from the Hip-Hop subculture deserves to be nominated?

Grammy 2

Best New Artist

Chance The Rapper

Anderson .Paak

In this category two rappers, Chance and Anderson have been nominated. With Chance dropping “Coloring Book” and Anderson dropping “Yes Lawd!” both these artists generated a buzz so high in the Hip Hop industry that personally I was not surprised in seeing them being  t nominated.

Grammy 3

Best Pop Duo/Group Performance

“Work” – Rihanna Featuring Drake

Dominating the billboards since the time it released, this track right here has over 700 million views and has been a hit. It is one track that certainly deserves to be here. Also, this track’s only competition in my perspective is Closer by The Chainsmokers which has over 800 million views on YouTube.

Best R&B Song

“Come and See Me” — PartyNextDoor Featuring Drake

Drake is the rapper with the highest nominations for a reason. After being so consistent, it’s hard for him not to earn so many nominations. With this track coming for OVO sounds it deserved to be in the category.

Both these categories had Drake as a feature. Seem’s like he’s on fire!

grammy 4

Finally the Rap categories.
Note : The Best Rap/Sung Collaboration category (in the Rap field) will be renamed as Best Rap/Sung Performance.

Best Rap Performance:

“No Problem” — Chance The Rapper Featuring Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz
“Panda” —Desiigner
“Pop Style” — Drake Featuring The Throne
“All The Way Up” — Fat Joe & Remy Ma Featuring French Montana & Infared
“That Part” — ScHoolboy Q Featuring Kanye West

Which one of these tracks are your favourites? Dab anthem ‘Panda’ or the club anthem ‘All The Way Up’. The category is going to be hard as all these tracks performed very well on the billboards. My personal favourite is definitely ‘Panda’ because I’ve been dabbing to it all year.

grammy 5

Best Rap/Sung Performance:

“Freedom” — Beyoncé Featuring Kendrick Lamar
“Hotline Bling” — Drake
“Broccoli” — D.R.A.M. Featuring Lil Yachty
“Ultralight Beam” — Kanye West Featuring Chance The Rapper, Kelly Price, Kirk Franklin & The-Dream
“Famous” — Kanye West Featuring Rihanna

Kanye West dominates these categories with two tracks from his ‘Life Of Pablo’ being nominated. Hotline Bling had to be in here because the way it dominated the charts was amazing. Freedom had a great verse from Kendrick and D.R.A.M’s ‘Broccoli’ did well on the charts too.Grammy 6

Best Rap Song:

“All The Way Up” — Fat Joe & Remy Ma Featuring French Montana & Infared
“Famous” — Kanye West Featuring Rihanna
“Hotline Bling” — Drake
“No Problem” —Chance The Rapper Featuring Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz
“Ultralight Beam” — Kanye West Featuring Chance The Rapper, Kelly Price, Kirk Franklin & The-Dream

This category is LIT! With Ultralight Beam being my favourite out of these nominations, the killer verse by Chance was enough for me. This is also a hard category with polls showing Hotline Bling to win.

Best Rap Album:

Coloring Book — Chance The Rapper
And the Anonymous Nobody — De La Soul
Major Key — DJ Khaled
Views — Drake
Blank Face LP — ScHoolboy Q
The Life of Pablo — Kanye West

This is the ultimate category for rap fans. With Dj Khaled’s all-star features to Chance The Rapper’s vibing tracks and the hype of Views to the unexpected nomination of De La Soul and ScHoolboy Q’s classic album. Who do you think will get this one?

Here are my predictions

Best Rap Album – Views
Best Rap Song – Ultralight Beam
Best Rap/Sung Performance – Hotline Bling
Best Rap Performance – Panda
Best New Artist – Chance The Rapper
