We, at DesiHipHop, guess that you already might have heard of Harjeet Singh aka Baba Sehgal. Baba Sehgal is a music producer & is credited as ‘First Professional Indian Rapper‘ who made it big in the early 90s. However, Baba is famous for dropping his style music through his social media which in fact, is not loved by the rappers. While a majority of listeners appreciate what he is doing, hip-hop artists worldwide are upset with his acts.
He started of way back in the late 80s but his breakthrough single was ‘Dil Dhadke‘. ‘Thanda Thanda Pani‘ was praised by the audience and soon Baba became a household name. Hip-hop was new to a majority of audience in India and Baba, on record, is the first famous rap artist from India.

Today, rappers like Badshah, Bohemia, Raftaar and others are everyone’s favorite. Bohemia has changed the game remarkably but it all started in India way back in the 90s. In this competitive industry, a senior artist is either respected or crushed. Unfortunately, Baba is on the later side. However, Baba is trying to compete with the market by dropping a different type of sound while delivering a message. Baba describes his music as “Simple, funny and realistic”.
But, what happened when Baba’s ‘Going to the Gym’ went viral on social media?
The track came out in the March of 2015. Due to its unusual concept and Baba’s wittiness, the track went viral on social media. People were laughing at it and it was being enjoyed. Then a series of tracks came in which were actually not what hip-hop audience expect from rappers. When we interviewed him a few months ago, he explained rap music as:
“‘Rap’ stands for ‘Rhythm & Poetry‘, any song with no content and a story is not a rap song. Songs like ‘Thanda Thanda Pani’, ‘Going to the Gym’, ‘Chicken Fried Rice’, ‘Rihanna o Rihanna’, ‘Trump Ka Mania’ and the recently released ‘Tu Apni Dekh’ are all true Hip-Hop tracks with definite content and story. I do my stuff my way and I’m proud of the same.”
Baba has recently acted in the forthcoming movie, ‘Bank Chor‘. The movie is a technological milestone in the Bollywood industry as it is going to be the first film in 16D. No one expected Baba in the movie but when the trailer came out, everyone was left amazed. On the other hand, Baba Sehgal has done the title song of the movie as well.
‘Bae, Baba Aur Bank Chor’ came out last week but it didn’t get much attention. Those who heard it, liked the hook section at most but hated the verses on the contrary. Baba’s pen game has always been entertaining but has been receiving backlash for degrading the level of hip-hop for everyone.
