Sometimes a small reminder of what people are missing out is very important. Authentic, old school hip hop is intrinsic to go in the right direction for anyone who loves the genre. However it’s not often that we get to listen to the old school styles and having someone who is dedicated to the art of the genre and who brings the old school out, is exactly what any city needs.
DJ Kan-I who introduced video turntablism to India, travels all over the US to play gigs but is equally popular in India for breathing life into every performance with his unique mixes and characteristic scratches. He’s a people’s DJ but he keeps it old school when it’s required. Kan-I has opened for Grammy Award winners such as Chamillionaire, Wycleaf Jean, Kardinall Offishall, Apache Indian and Jay Sean. He has also collaborated with Punjabi MC and DJ Ta-Shi, among others.
He has been in the industry for 16 years and vouches for turntablism; he believes that it’s not something that ever went out of the game. It’s an art form for this Hyderabad boy who grew up listening to Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh before hip hop took over his life. Kan-I’s video of Lean On mash-up which features Bollywood actor Govinda went viral. He strongly believes in the fruits of one’s effort and is completely against sync mixing when it comes to DJing.
