#AlbumReview : ‘Do What Thou Wilt’ by Ab-Soul, He is back in his prime!

I usually take around 5 to 6 repetitions of the entire album prior to an album review but that would not do justice to this one, ‘Do What Thou Wilt’ by Ab-Soul is something else and this album is also a proof that all the artists under TDE are not here to play around. The album was the worth the wait. His album reflects his respect for the art and he is a brilliant wordsmith who really does pay attention to lyricism. Even if he is not the everyday genius his music surely proves that he is a street smart cat and knows exactly how to pursue what he wants. The cover of ‘Do What Thou Wilt’ has Soul, posing for the first time without any sunglasses and is directly staring into the lens as if he is directly staring at the listener.

Those who know Ab-Soul know that he just like his crewmates was famous but the dough was missing, TDE were hungry since their youth and were just waiting for the right time to capture the scene. Ab-Soul gained a lot of fans from ‘Control System’ in 2012 but saw a decline after ‘These Days’.

Coming back to the album, it starts off with “Raw (backwards)” which features Zacari, it is a great way to start off the album. The message is simple and is that no more wack bars in 2017. A visit through the first four tracks and a stoppage on the fourth one “Threatening Nature” will make you wonder that the production on the album so far is so dark that even a black hole might shy away. Soul goes into a tad light in ‘God’s A Girl?‘ and gets revitalised for his haymaker that is ‘Evil Genius’. Soul lost his girl in 2012 and the following bars from ‘Evil Genius’ pinched me, “told Lori I wouldn’t do coke again, but she did what she did and I’m here again” (I am not endorsing the use of coke of coping up with the loss of a lost one or any other occasion as well). Tracks like ‘D.R.U.G.S’ and ‘Lonely Soul’ have the type of lyricism which will make you listen to them twice if not more. “The Law” which features Mac Miller and Rapsody probably had one of the best beats on the album.

The album is already creating quite the buzz on the Internet and a lot of people are saying that Soul is back in his Control System mode and I could not agree more with them.
